ROANOKE RAPIDS — The Habitat for Humanity members held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to build their 28th home for a family in need.
Executive Director for the organization Rochelle King said the completion of the house usually takes about a year, depending on the number of volunteers and weather, King said.
“This also gives the partner a year to save up money for the closing costs,” she said. “We don’t charge a down payment, but she does have to pay for closing items, which are really things for herself. Things like homeowners’ insurance — she has to pay a year in advance. Then we escrow for the homeowner’s insurance and for the real estate tax. It’s really her fees that she’s paying. That gives her a chance that year to save up the money for that.”
Because it is a new construction for a house, King said the family will need to put in 200 hours each of sweat equity into the home.

Halifax-Northampton Habitat for Humanity had a groundbreaking Wednesday afternoon on Russell Street in Gaston for the latest home the organization plans to build. This home will also be the 25th family served by this organization.

Long, Jr.," said Rochelle King, executive director of Halifax-Northampton Habitat for Humanity. "With God all things are possible! Also, the State Employee's Credit Union has given Habitat of NC a challenge to build 100 homes in 100 NC counties beginning with the poorest. This home will be one of the homes to meet that challenge.
